Representatives of the Meraux Foundation recently presented members of the St. Bernard Parish School Board a final check, completing a $1.8 million donation toward the construction of the Cultural Arts Center of Chalmette High School. Foundation Board members Rita and Floyd Gue and Sal Gutierrez were on hand during ceremonies at Chalmette High School to present School Superintendent Doris Voitier and CHS Principal Wayne Warner with a final payment of $600,000 to complete the total donation.
"Today, the Meraux Foundation completes its promise to bring a quality performance venue to the children of this parish. Their work with and dedication to our re-building program over the past three years has made the construction site across the street a reality, and we welcome with great gratitude the Foundation's past, present, and future commitment to the cultural arts programs in our school system," said School Superintendent Doris Voitier said to students, faculty and community members gathered in the high school gymnasium.
In presenting the check to the Board, Floyd Gue told the assembly that the Meraux Foundation's commitment to the children runs deep. "We have been an on-going supporter of the Cultural Arts program in the schools and have been astonished by the growth that we have seen in the children's performances over the years. The performances are always first-class, and this parish is indeed fortunate to have such a wonderful training ground for our talented youngsters. We are more than pleased to be allowed to play a small part in our support of the school system's efforts," he said.
The Meraux Foundation has helped produce theatrical performances at the high school over the past years. And in addition to on-going support of various school programs, the Foundation also provides 50 college scholarships, each worth $4000, to deserving Chalmette High graduates each year.
Also on hand for the presentation for the Cultural Arts building were Kelsey Acosta, CHS Student Body President, and School Board members: Board President Clifford Englande, Board Vice-President Dianna Dysart, and members Joseph Long, Dr. Hugh Craft, Dr. Henderson Lewis, and Perry Nicosia.
